Nissan will withdraw from Europe and other parts of the world to focus on the United States, China and Japan, according to Reuters. The move will be announced on May 28, when the company’s 3-year action plan expires. Sources in the publication say it will focus on the problems caused by Carlos Gon’s aggressive expansion plan.
As is known, the former boss of Renault-Nissan was arrested on charges of financial machinations, and then Gon managed to escape justice in Japan like in an American action movie. This same man was “guilty” of rescuing Nissan from bankruptcy two decades ago, and is now blamed for all of the company’s problems.
Among its mistakes is the search for a large market share, especially in the United States, which has led to large discounts and a strong devaluation of the brand. The new plan will aim to reconnect with distributors and update the model line to restore prices and profits, according to Reuters.
Pan also aims to reduce competition and expand cooperation between Alliance partners. Nissan will follow in the footsteps of Mitsubishi, focusing on plug-in hybrid models. Renault is likely to maintain its focus on electric cars in Europe.
The plan should free up resources to invest in products and technologies for the United States, China and Japan.
For the time being, according to a Reuters post, Nissan will maintain its presence in Europe only through Qashqai and Juke. But it will take a more serious look at the markets of India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Russia, Brazil and Mexico.
To date, Nissan has entered the European market with Qashqai, Juke, X-Trail crossovers, Micra small-city model, GT-R and 370Z sports, as well as electric Leaf and E-NV200. Last year, around 394,000 cars were sold in Europe, which is 19.6% less than in 2018.
The new plan foresees the closure of 14 plants. The company’s previous estimates were for a capacity of more than 7 million cars in three shifts. The new plan focuses on an annual capacity of 5.5 million cars, after the 14 plants in question are closed and the rest work two shifts.
Finally, we must remember that Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury division, has already stopped operating in the Old Continent.
