In an extraordinary session today, the parliament in Athens will discuss the frequent clashes between citizens and police.
A peaceful demonstration by residents of the Nea Smyrni neighborhood of Athens against police violence has turned into clashes with the police. This came after anarchists joined the demonstration, throwing Mollotov cocktails and stones at the police. Four policemen were injured, one of them in serious condition, according to doctors.
The police used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
In a televised emergency speech, Prime Minister Mitsotakis called on “both sides to remain calm.”
“Blind rage is going nowhere,” Mitsotakis said, addressing primarily the young people who participated in the protests.
Today, the prime minister and opposition leader Alexis Tsipras will discuss in parliament the growing manifestations of civil protests and aggressive behavior towards the forces of order.
