NEW THREAT: A dangerous strain of virus threatens the world

In the context of a coronavirus epidemic, scientists warn of the emergence of a new one: Nipah. It is common in bats in Bangladesh and India and could become a dangerous strain that could spread rapidly between humans and become a deadly disease, according to the British newspaper “Express”.

VEXAS SYNDROME: A rare and deadly new disease is discovered

Nipah is listed by the World Health Organization as one of the 10 highest priority pathogens to urgently treat due to the potential harm it can cause.

The virus usually infects people who have eaten fruit with saliva from a sick animal. Currently there is no drug or vaccine in the world against this virus and the mortality rate from infection reaches 90%.

Scientists warn that the virus is more common than previously thought. The shoots have multiplied in areas where the fruits are missing, which until now have been linked to the disease.

They note that, unlike Sars-CoV-2, the Nipah virus is not as easily transmitted from person to person, but bats probably already have strains with altered characteristics.

The worst infections in history

If that happens, the result could be a massive spread of the deadly disease, warns research team leader Jonathan Epstein.

So far, outbreaks remain sporadic, but the number of cases is underestimated because their symptoms are similar to those of other diseases such as Japanese encephalitis and malaria.
