Older people continue to be the most common victims of phone scams.

Metodi Zehirov received a call from an unknown number. When he picked up the phone on the other end, he heard a male voice introducing himself as Bozhidar Popov, a criminal policeman. He asked him if he had savings in a bank and if so, if he had to withdraw them immediately, because they would take them away.

“They will lead them through hacker attacks, there are hackers, you know? They act from a distance and then when people come home, they don’t have the money. There are such cases. That’s why they caught me,” Metodi Zehirov said. to BNT.

The scammer told the old man to withdraw BGN 13,000 from his account and put them in the refrigerator compartment, because if they were somewhere else, the thieves could find them.

“Come on, he says, go, go and go to the bank. I’m going, I came back after that. Did you get the money? I withdrew just for me, I mean, they don’t give anymore. No, he says, you have to go get it. And like take it and tell them you need it to buy a property. When I went to the bank and back they said: Sir, the GSM should be open and they were checking me on the way. Sir, did you go? ? I’m going to take the taxi, “said Metodi Zehirov.

A bank employee became suspicious after her husband told him about the incident. A call to 112 followed and the fraud attempt was prevented.

Police began working on the case and Metodi no longer received calls. He says he knows of schemes in which phone scammers seek money to treat loved ones, but in this case he has no doubts because he was not asked for money directly.

An elderly woman from the Ruse region has handed over BGN 15,800 to phone scammers in Romania.
