The United States strongly condemns the arrest of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny upon his return to Russia several months after his alleged poisoning. This was stated in a statement by the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, reported AFP.
The statement expressed great concern over Navalny’s arrest and said her arrest was the latest in a series of attempts by Navalny and other opposition figures and independent voices criticizing authorities to be silenced.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo called for Navalny’s immediate release, calling his arrest upon arrival in Russia “a matter of very serious concern.” Di Mayo expressed confidence that Navalny’s rights will be respected, BTA reported.
Canada’s new Foreign Minister Marc Garno said Canada strongly condemned Navalny’s arrest when he arrived in Moscow and deemed it unacceptable. The minister said Canada will continue to ask for explanations about the Navalny poisoning, AFP reported.
Previously, there were reactions to the arrest from France, the Baltic states, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, as well as Joe Biden’s team and the EU.
