Schools, kindergartens and shops were closed in Nice and throughout the region. Dozens of people were evacuated.
Heavy rains and strong winds hit the southern French departments, the worst situation was in the Alpes-Maritimes, and a road bridge collapsed near the municipality of Saint Martin Vesuvius.
One of the bridge sails could not support the approaching Boreo River. It is not said whether there were any casualties, but houses were damaged downstream.
Due to the deterioration of the situation in several cities in the region, large shopping centers were closed, trains were stopped on Friday afternoon and classes in schools and universities were canceled.
Due to the rain, Nice airport was temporarily closed.
According to France Bleu radio, more than 8,000 homes were without power on Friday night. Rescue teams have carried out more than 200 operations and are now searching for four people who allegedly disappeared without a trace of the natural disaster.
The meteorological service Meteo France forecasts rainfall of up to 150-250mm on Saturday morning, and in some places up to 400mm. The service announced the highest levels of “red” danger. An “orange alarm” has also been declared in the central parts of the country, as well as in two departments of the western province of Brittany.
