French police shot dead a man who had killed a high school teacher minutes earlier by cutting his throat on a street in a Paris suburb, Reuters reported.

The French counter-terrorism prosecutor said he was investigating the attack in Conflans-Saint-Honorine, a northwestern suburb of Paris, as a terrorist act.

The alleged assailant was seen by a police patrol while walking with a knife in his hand not far from the scene of the attack and was shot dead, a police spokesman said.

The teacher showed his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in class. According to a police source, eyewitnesses heard the attacker shouting “Allah is great.” A police spokesman said this information was being verified.

According to another police source, the victim was beheaded in the attack, but this was not confirmed.

In recent years, France has experienced a series of attacks by Islamic extremists. At the end of last month, an immigrant from Pakistan assaulted two people with a butcher in front of the old edition of the satirical weekly “Charlie Hebdo”. In the same place, five years ago, Islamist militants shot and killed employees of the publication in retaliation for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
