The EPP group fully supports the government and Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. This is, in short, the position expressed by the president of the European People’s Party in the EP, Manfred Weber. The GERB and the Sofia government are pouring out champagne: they have rubbed the noses of the protest and opposition formations, which have been demanding the resignation of Borisov, Geshev and the entire government for more than three months.
Corruption in the government and the government mafiation were discussed by the left, the Greens and some others. However, most have the EPP and the GERB MEPs, although they are aware that they are talking nonsense about some non-existent achievements of the “Borisov 3” cabinet, they are calm, they have the support of the “big brother”. Traditionally, the “big brother” takes an interest and hopes that the little brother, Bulgaria, will listen to him and from time to time give him his pennies to win his favor. The pennies in our case are millions, which instead of pensions and salaries of the Bulgarians, go to the bank accounts indicated by the “older brother”. Not in his name, of course, because the Eurobosses are not presumably corrupt …
What exactly does this mean?
The worst result is the demotivation of civil society in Bulgaria and doubt about the values of civilization, which should have helped us to build a democratic state.
I will remember some episodes in our history. Devetashka Cave was first described in 1877 by the English traveler John Baker. Thanks to this, many people from all over the world get to know Bulgaria for the first time. Baker also describes what he saw in our lands, so the weight of the Bulgarians was made known in some way.
In 2011, scenes for the Hollywood production “Invincible 2” were filmed in Devetashka Cave. Starring stars like Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude van Dam, and others. The film crew built a bridge over the Osam River, which greatly facilitated access to the unique cave. The world has gotten to know Bulgaria again.
In the same year, when Baker discovered the natural landmark, Russian troops fought fierce battles with the Turkish army near Pleven. On December 10, the city fell and the course of the War of Liberation turned in Russia’s favor. 2020 EPP President Manfred Weber is something like the former representative of the Soviet Union in the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CAME) and the Warsaw Pact. Something like the general secretary of the CPSU, Leonid Brezhnev. It was enough for Brezhnev that Todor Zhivkov and the Bulgarian Communist Party were loyal and obedient to Moscow. Werner wants the same from Borissov and GERB, and he gets it.
Ursula von der Leyen, David Sasoli, Donald Tusk and others from the “big brother” company look at Bulgaria from Olympus in Brussels. From there they see the domes of “St. Alabama. Behind his back, he boasts that he “pushed 200”, but they swallow this “artistic expression” because they need twice as a weak student for the school, which awaits funding for a certain number.
The other “older brother” also receives his share from “little Kalpazan” Borisov (a similar case with the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega). So far in the form of billions paid in green for future planes, but there may be other things we don’t know about. Something similar is happening with Moscow, Berlin, Ankara… Borisov boasts of having wonderful relations with them, but as a country not only do we have no visible profit from this, but we even collect billions in losses. Belene NPP, Turkish Stream, South Stream are only part of the evidence for this.
What should we do? Where to go?
There is no way to catch up with the signing of the Great Charter of Freedoms, known as the Magna Carta in 1215, which guarantees and protects the rights and interests of the aristocracy and citizens from the actions of the royal government in England. At that time, in Bulgaria, Tsar Kaloyan was assassinated and Boril married his wife to legalize his accession to the throne.
However, we can learn from the experience of democratic, economic, social and legally ordered countries. Let’s apply them in our specific conditions and pay the price, because there is nothing free. We must do it ourselves, not wait for English travelers and liberators near Pleven. The protests are the first steps in this direction. And thank goodness. For three months they have shown that citizens dislike the ugliness, simplicity, immorality and cynicism of those in power, whoever they are. The protests forced the Brussels Central Committee to realize that something was happening here. At some point, the protests will force the EU to topple Borissov, just like Moscow toppled Zhivkov.
Once again, the protests made the Bulgarians think about the incomprehensible lack of control of the Attorney General. They also saw what it meant to depend on questionable circles, not the law.
Borissov and GERB are afraid and will no longer have a moment of rest. They will have to answer publicly for the million euro drawer and the gold bars inside with a gun next to it. For corruption, theft and purchase of the “love of the people” delivering money from the jeep.
The protests also ushered in the end of degradation, a great achievement in an anesthetized country. This process may take longer than we want, but as long as we learn how to get out on squares, it will.
It may seem exaggerated, but the current protests are the first to offset the “Hungarian events” of 1956, the Prague Spring of 1968, and the Polish events of the 1980s, which began with Solidarity. Changing the mode and changing the model. This is the only path that leads to democracy and not to a false “perestroika” preached today by the first perestroika Borisov, GERB and company.
