A total of 73 Bulgarian scientists from some 60 universities in 12 countries around the world issued an open letter in support of civil protests against the government and Attorney General Ivan Geshev.
“We support the protests in Bulgaria and their demands for an independent judiciary, a transparent and accountable government and free media. We also support the right of people to express their views freely, which includes the right to protest peacefully,” they said.
Academics are concerned about the resistance of various political parties to civic pressure to reform the judiciary, the prosecution and special services.
“With this in mind, we believe that Bulgarians abroad could be particularly helpful in providing an independent expert opinion on the country’s reform process. We do not represent any political parties or other interests. We strongly believe that when people are united by the right goal, they will find a way to achieve it. For a better Bulgaria! “the letter reads.
Scientists are calling for police violence against peaceful protesters and journalists.
“Bulgaria is a state governed by the rule of law, which must respect the law, its constitution and its obligations under international law, including respect for fundamental human rights,” the authors of the letter said.
A month ago, more than 250 scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences issued a letter openly supporting the protests against the government and the attorney general.
