More than 500 people were arrested today during opposition rallies in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, and other Belarusian cities, AFP reported, citing human rights organization Viasna, BNR reported.
A dozen journalists were arrested during today’s demonstrations against President Alexander Lukashenko, re-elected in August with 80 percent of the vote.
Since August, the Belarusian opposition has been organizing demonstrations every week, attracting tens of thousands of participants each time, recalls AFP. Lukashenko has continued to clamp down on the opposition, despite sanctions imposed by the European Union and dozens of Belarusian officials.

After three months of protests, Belarus appears to be at a dead end given Lukashenko’s refusal to resign, the agency said.
Like every Sunday for the past three months, thousands of protesters marched in the Belarusian capital today, urging Lukashenko to step down and hand over power to opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovska.
Vilnius Tikhanovska has vowed to continue protests against falsifying the results of the presidential elections on August 9.
Unlike Lukashenko, who described the US elections as a “hoax on democracy,” Tikhanovskaya called it a “true race of ideas” and expressed his hope to meet with newly elected US President Joe Biden.
