Bulgaria will call its ambassador to Belarus for consultations. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ekaterina Zaharieva, who participates in the GLOBSEC meeting in Bratislava, reported BGNES.

During the conference, Minister Zaharieva met with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, one of the opposition leaders in Belarus, where protests continue against the authoritarian regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

“Today our ambassador in Minsk, Georgi Vassilev, delivered a note to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry with the decision of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry to call him for consultations. This is a sign of solidarity with our partners Poland and Lithuania, after that Belarus asked them to reduce the composition of the missions of both countries and withdraw their ambassadors. Other EU countries have made similar decisions, “said Minister Zaharieva.

He reiterated his call to the Minsk authorities for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and all those detained during the peaceful protests, for a swift and effective investigation of police violence and for a true national dialogue with the opposition, with the ultimate goal of organizing new, free and fair elections, in accordance with the democratic demands of the Belarusian people.

“EU countries must unequivocally support the Belarusian people and show solidarity with them. I will continue to closely participate in the events in Belarus and monitor the situation there,” Minister Zaharieva said.
