“At this stage, a total blockade is not expected. We approach in the most rational way, seeking the balance between ensuring the health and social system on the one hand, on the other, the economy to work. This is a rather complicated balance and we strive for this rational policy, “said Economy Minister Lachezar Borisov at Hello Bulgaria.
Can the economy overcome the COVID-19 crisis?
He recalled that even during the state of emergency in the country, there was not a complete shutdown and some sectors continued to operate. The Minister stressed that our country is an open economy and depends on what is happening in other countries.
“You can see that only from the anti-epidemic measures of the second quarter of the year we lost 8.5% of GDP. Respectively, this carries over to the revenue portion of the budget. Fortunately, Bulgaria has done very well and, at the moment, according to the forecasts of the European Commission, it is one of the best performing countries in the financial and macroeconomic sphere. “Both in terms of GDP and in terms of financial stability, we are among the leaders of the European Union,” said Minister Borissov.
EC: Bulgaria is the only EU country with a deficit that will not exceed 3% of GDP
He also cites a forecast from the European Commission, according to which our country will end the year with a deficit three times better than the average of the European Union. Bulgaria also has a debt 4 times better than the EU average.
“In the context of everything that is happening in the European Union, we have some of the best buffers and we can deal with these ‘shocks’. So far, the Ministry of Economy, together with the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, has invested almost BGN 1 billion in the Bulgarian economy. This is through measure 60/40, through the grant schemes and through the BDB, “added Borissov.
He called for solidarity and compliance with the measures, because if they are not complied with, their benefits will be nil. The minister explained that another 330 million BGN will be paid according to the procedures in force at the end of the year and two new procedures will be opened, which will open in the new year. Borissov said that a liquidity grant scheme will be announced during the month for companies with a turnover of more than BGN 500,000.
“We immediately started a procedure to deal with the coronary crisis. There will be specific measures for companies to transform their businesses into an online environment. Then we continue to work on the EU initiative worth BGN 391 million, which will be for the recovery, growth, digitization and innovation of companies, “said the Minister.
