We are all currently witnessing the shocking divorce between Lionel Messi and Barcelona. Who would have guessed that exactly this way the relationship between the Argentine and the Catalan club would end. It was one of the ports of romance in the corrupt business of modern football.
Of course, it was clear that one day it would end, but the way it is happening now is, to put it mildly, surprising. And quite sad.
The damage to the reputation of both the footballer and the club has already been inflicted and is irreparable. Whichever side turns out well. What they say about La Liga or a referee.
It is clear that nobody will be able to downplay the importance that Leo Messi had for the dozens of trophies that Barcelona won with him in their ranks. But leaving him after 20 years at the club will not be what we all expected.
There will be no farewell game at the Camp Nou. There will be no applause at his feet, as Messi enjoys every time he enters the arena of Catalonia. There will be no photo with lots of trophies won. There will be no smiles on the faces and tears in the eyes of both the fans and the players. The stands will not have the opportunity to express their deserved gratitude to the Argentine genius.
For the first time, Barcelona fans doubt their love for the club, something unthinkable a few years ago. Messi’s image is already tarnished, although he himself would hardly want it. Both he and the club could have acted a little differently.
Not that the Argentine was forced to accept all the club-level failures of recent years. The club shouldn’t let him go as a free agent either. But things could have been done in a bit more modern way. A hand extended to either side could have an incredible effect and everything that we are witnessing now could be avoided.
It no longer matters who is right and who is wrong. As with many sections, each country has its own version. The important thing is that Lionel Messi is no longer the same god in the eyes of the Catalan fans, and Barça has written another shameful page in its history.
There are also divorces, after which the partners remain friends. Very few, but they exist. We all expected this to happen to Messi and Barcelona. But as it happens in most cases, it is most likely not them, but a judge will determine what their separation should be.
