German Chancellor Angela Merkel has asked her compatriots to refrain from visiting relatives at Christmas and to greet them online. “The women and men who are away from home to ensure our safety know what it means to have limited contact with their loved ones,” Merkel said in her weekly video podcast. According to her, these people know what it’s like to be able to connect with their loved ones just on Skype for a long time instead of being with them.
The Robert Koch Institute reports that more than 31,000 new coronavirus infections and 702 deaths have been reported in Germany in the past 24 hours. The number of new infections is double that of December 15, the day before Germany enters its second strict lockdown, which is expected to last until at least January 10.
In her call before Christmas and New Years, Merkel urged Germans not to take minor trips and to minimize their social contacts, as experts predict an increase in new coronavirus cases during the holidays.
