The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament will meet tomorrow 10 September and will hear from the Vice-President of the EC, Vera Yourova, on the cooperation and verification mechanism.

This follows from a statement from the press service of the Bulgarian government. The announcement actually refutes the information spread that Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has been invited to a hearing at LIBE on the rule of law in our country.

“At the request of the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria to the EU in Brussels, a response was received from the Secretariat of the European Parliament that no government representative will be invited, as the main objective is to discuss the position of the European Commission on the Mechanism by the members “, says the Council of Ministers.

“Neither Prime Minister Borissov nor any member of the Bulgarian government have been invited to the next meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament LIBE on September 10. Furthermore, the regulation of the hearing of the deputy in the agenda. The president of the European Commission, Vera Yourova, on the cooperation and verification mechanism, does not allow the Bulgarian government to express an opinion “adds the government information service.

GERB MEPs also issued a statement on the matter. Bulgarian representatives are not invited to present the status of SMEs in the EP. they announced:

Position of the GERB / EPP MEPs

Tomorrow (10 September 2020) the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament will hear a presentation by the Vice-President of Values and Transparency of the European Commission, Vera Yourova. Unlike posts on Bulgarian social media and websites, this will be neither a debate nor a public hearing, but only a presentation of the current state of the cooperation and verification mechanism, which affects both Bulgaria and Romania.

This presentation, which is only a small part of a total of 14 items on the commission’s meeting agenda, was not invited and will not be attended by representatives of any institution from the two countries, but only MEPs. This is common practice in these types of presentations and only MEPs will be able to speak. Who exactly they are will be clarified shortly before the meeting.

The Secretariat of the European Parliament clarified that they will not invite a representative of the Bulgarian government, because the meeting will mainly discuss the position of the European Commission on the current state of SMEs, which applies to both Bulgaria and Romania.
