The city of almost 5 million people has undergone one of the longest quarantines in the world. The restrictions were imposed in early July, when daily cases reached nearly 200 a day.
Despite the measures, the number of infected rose to about 700 a day in early August, prompting Prime Minister Daniel Andrews to declare a state of emergency and introduce some of the world’s toughest measures in the state.
The measures included curfews, and residents were allowed to travel a maximum of 5 kilometers from their home and play sports for one hour a day outdoors.
The quarantine officially ended at midnight Tuesday and restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops were allowed to open to customers.
Some bars held New Years celebrations counting until midnight, when they allowed a limited number of patrons to enter the doors with toast and confetti.
Melbourne residents are still limited to 25 kilometers. This restriction is expected to be lifted on November 8.
In Australia, only 12 cases of infection with the new coronavirus have been recorded in the last 24 hours, adds BTA.
