Vaccination of the population against COVID-19 began today in the United States, world agencies reported.

The Associated Press notes that this is the most massive vaccination campaign in the country’s history, reports BTA.

Reuters describes its emergence as a turning point in efforts to curb the deadly virus. The United States is the country most affected by the pandemic, with the most infected (more than 16 million and 257 thousand) and deaths (more than 299 thousand).

Vaccination among medical workers has started. The first person to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in the United States was Sandra Lindsay, an intensive care nurse. She was vaccinated at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said, according to Reuters.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the start of the vaccination campaign, AFP reported.

“First vaccine administered. Congratulations to the United States, congratulations to the WORLD,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The vaccination of the population will begin today in neighboring Canada.
