The mandatory use of outdoor masks is expected to be introduced in the country soon, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health to the media. The measure is not yet an official fact, since the formal order of Professor Kostadin Angelov on the matter is missing.
However, information from the institution’s press service explicitly states that the ministry’s expert councils, as well as the chief state health inspector, Prof. Angel Kunchev, support the use of outdoor masks.
This is the simplest possible measure and, in view of the experience of those who support it, I think we should introduce it.
Health Minister
This was said by the Minister of Health, quoted by the press center of the institution he directs. According to him, together with strengthened control for the observance of anti-epidemic measures, it could reduce the morbidity of the coronavirus by up to 30%. Although health authorities have so far announced the introduction of anti-epidemic measures separately by district rather than at the national level, the announcement by the health department to the media does not make it clear that the measure will apply only to individual regions.
The measure of wearing masks outdoors against the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (which causes COVID-19 disease) was one of those that changed dynamically at the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic in Bulgaria. People were required to cover their mouths and noses initially from the end of March, although masks were still a rare commodity in pharmacies at the time. Thus, in less than a day, the then Health Minister Kiril Ananiev revoked his order after strong public reactions. Subsequently, wearing masks became mandatory in April and the requirement to wear them outdoors was removed from the beginning of May.
Experts from the Ministry of Health have also approved the intention to reduce the mandatory quarantine from 14 to 10 days, provided that the isolates do not show symptoms. An order on this issue has yet to be issued, so the quarantine mitigation is still in words only, but has not been officially filed.
