Maria Zaharova: Sofia will end her participation in “witch hunt”

Russia reserves the right to reciprocal measures in response to the expulsion of two Russian diplomats from Bulgaria. This is stated in an official statement by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

Remember that the Bulgarian authorities have taken such an action for the fifth time in the last year and a half and again without providing any evidence. According to her, these actions were preceded by a noisy campaign by the public prosecutor’s office in Bulgaria to expose a group of people allegedly working for Russia in the state power structures.

Thus, according to the familiar scenario, the ground was prepared for the expulsion of our diplomats, says Zaharova.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that another escalation of anti-Russian “espionage” in Bulgaria was repeated on the eve of the April 4 parliamentary elections and in the context of the outbreak of Russophobia in the West, especially in the United States.

Once again, we call on Officer Sofia to stop her involvement in the “witch hunt”, damaging the national interests of Bulgaria itself. It is time to return to the constructive bilateral agenda, which is much more natural for Russian-Bulgarian relations, “said Maria Zakharova.

A few days ago, the Russian embassy in Bulgaria demanded that all speculations regarding the case against the six spy suspects go to court. The diplomatic mission expressed its confidence that “the trial will be carried out on a depoliticized, impartial and objective basis and in strict compliance with the norms of Bulgarian law and international law.”
