The businessman and leader of the Volia party, Veselin Mareshki, received a sentence below the minimum for the excessive length of the case against him. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison for extortion, but the case has been going on for six years and has ended in the second instance. The minimum sentence for this criminal group is five years.
From the motives of the Varna Court of Appeal, Mareshki is understood to have “contradictory characteristics”. The judges say that he enjoys a good reputation and authority among parts of society, but they say that among others he is known as a person from whom everything can be expected. The court writes that he is known for his connections in criminal circles and for the feeling that “anything can get away with it.”
Krassimira Koleva, who was also convicted as an accessory to Mareshki, is said to take care of her young son and work, but in this context she is trying to illegally settle her disputes with her ex-husband and sister. he was sentenced to three years in prison.
The verdict against the two can be appealed to the Supreme Court of Cassation.
According to the indictment, in the period from October 9 to November 16, 2014, Mareshki and Koleva blackmailed businessman Asen Milanov into paying them a rent of BGN 10,000 for their pizzeria in Varna. The problem is that the property was not theirs. Milanov already had a lease with Tony D., with whom he had a contractual relationship.
Asen Milanov is the ex-husband of Krassimira Koleva. The prosecution’s accusations are that after the businesswoman was unable to recover her property in court, she sought the help of Veselin Mareshki.
The state prosecutor’s office explains Mareshki’s intervention by the fact that Krassimira Koleva owed BGN 65,000 to his wife. According to the indictment, he teamed up to get his money back. After Milanov refused to pay the rent to the two defendants, they retaliated. They filed complaints and began legality inspections of an external structure, which expanded the area of the establishment, leading to its demolition.
Subsequently, at the request of Krassimira Koleva, the power supply was cut off at the site. Then Asen Milanov asked the leader of “Vazrazhdane” and municipal councilor in Varna Kostadin Kostadinov for help. The tenant of the pizzeria hoped that Kostadinov could help him resolve the conflict with Mareshki.
On October 15, 2014, after a scandal in the street, there was physical violence by the leader of “Will.” Mareshki was detained by the police and charged with beating Kostadinov.
In court, Mareshki said that he had only made a commercial offer to Milanov to pay the rent for the use of the terrace, which was his. The court accepted that this was only a defensive reaction from the businessman, which was refuted by the evidence in the case.
The information from the special intelligence media shows that Mareshki not only asked the witness to pay him monthly rent, but by refusing, he threatened to stop the works of the restaurant and demolish it. Mareshki provided equipment and workers for the demolition of the pizzeria’s awning and called in security guards so the artisans could work.
