A 75-year-old man strangled his ailing wife in Smyadovo after he couldn’t bear the burden of caring for her.

The murder took place tonight, and today the victim had to be housed in a hospice in the Shumen village of Drumevo, Monitor reported.

The prosecution gave details of the gruesome murder in Smyadovo

Pencho Ganchev and his wife Cornelia, 74, lived apart for 15-20 years. The man used to work on the railroads and Cornelia was a respected children’s teacher in the city. After leaving kindergarten, he observed sick people, mostly with strokes.

About a month ago, Cornelia lost her health. She suffered a stroke and had to be cared for. The family has two children, Pencho lived with one, and the children managed to convince their father to join their mother and take care of her. They rented a studio apartment on the first floor of the Tsar Kaloyan street block and Pencho really took care of Cornelia. However, facing the sets abroad, he said that it was very difficult for him to cope and that he could not bear it.

Due to the serious condition of the woman, the family, with the help of the Smyadovo City Council, managed to prepare the documents and organize Cornelia’s accommodation in a hospice in the village of Drumevo. The final details were clarified on Wednesday and on Thursday she was to be admitted to the hospice. However, it does not happened.

For reasons unknown at this stage, the man assaulted the sick woman and strangled her. “He handed over the burden of caring for her,” commented people who know both of them Thursday morning.

Later on Thursday, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria announced that preliminary proceedings were taking place in the case under the supervision of the prosecutor on duty at the Shumen District Prosecutor’s Office.

Pencho Ganchev will be charged and detained for 72 hours until the accused appears in court.
