At a special press conference, Dr. Skender Sila, representative of the World Health Organization in Bulgaria, made a comment on the subject. Expert opinion on the situation in our country was given by the Head of State Health Inspectors, Prof. Angel Kunchev and Prof. Asena Serbezova – President of the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union;

Dr. Sila thanks all health professionals for the fight against coronavirus in Bulgaria. He expressed his condolences to the families of those who died from the insidious disease.

Dr. Sila explained that there was an uncontrolled use of antibiotics. That is why a lot of attention is paid to society. According to him, we must be careful, because otherwise there may be a risk to our future. Dr. Sila announced that everyone must take responsibility in this regard.

“We must not allow the COVID-19 pandemic to turn into a disaster called antimicrobial resistance,” he said.

He cites data from an international study showing that antibiotics were used primarily for prevention. Many people take it without symptoms, warns the WHO specialist. Otherwise, only 8% of those infected with coronavirus have a microbial infection, yet antibiotics are widely prescribed.

Is the chaos with COVID-19 intensifying in Bulgaria?

Dr. Skala said that successful prevention and control measures should be everyone’s cause. Therefore, even in animal husbandry, care must be taken with the use of antibiotics.
