The Catalan giants of Barcelona will have to pay Lionel Messi a loyalty bonus of 33 million euros next summer, ESPN reports.
The money is owed to the 33-year-old Argentine under a four-year contract signed in 2017. In February 2020, Messi received the first part of the loyalty bonus, also equivalent to 33 million euros.
Messi also took a bonus of around 100 million euros to renew the contract, which was paid to him during the term of the contract.
In August, Messi refused to train for Barcelona. The Argentine said that he is no longer considered a player for the Catalan club. The forward’s decision was due to the team’s failed performances in the Champions League in recent seasons.
According to the star, he had the right to retire as a free agent in connection with a clause in this deal. The team management, in turn, threatened the player with a fine for not training.
In September, Messi announced that he would continue to play for Barcelona. The management stated that Messi can only leave if he is paid a compensation of 700 million euros.
