The specialized criminal court announced the verdicts in the Sarafovo case. The attack on the Burgas district airport, in which a kamikaze attacker blew up a bus with Israeli tourists on July 18, 2012, killed the Bulgarian driver Mustafa Kyosev, five Israelis and the attacker himself. As a result of the explosion, 40 people were injured.
The Lebanese Meliad Farah and Hassan al-Haj Hassan were sentenced in absentia by the Specialized Criminal Court to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The two are being tried in absentia as they continue to be wanted by Interpol’s red bulletin.
The magistrates also decided that the assassin’s accomplices should pay compensation to the citizens injured in the attack in various amounts, from BGN 350,000 to BGN 9 million.
The total amount of non-pecuniary damage suffered, recognized to the victims by the court, amounts to more than 100 million BGN.
