Lewis Hamilton won the Algarve tie after defeating his teammate, Valteri Botas, by 0.102. Both achieved their best times on medium tires. Max Verstappen was more than 2 tenths behind them and Charles Löckler was fourth.

The start of qualifying was postponed 30 minutes due to faulty axles, which were discovered after Sebastian Vettel’s accident in the last practice. The bailiffs managed to cope and the session began at 2:30 p.m. local time.

Sergio Pérez recorded the first fastest lap of Q1. Later, he improved it and thus took a temporary advantage with 1: 17.629.

Its circumference was improved by the Mercedes drivers and Max Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton was in the lead with 1: 16,828, followed by Max and Valteri, respectively, as the times of the three added to a tenth.

5 minutes before the end Antonio Giovinazzi and Sebastian Vettel were threatened with relegation. The Ferrari driver was ranked 14th, while his teammate Charles Löckler was fifth at the moment.

At the end of Q1, the two drivers from Alfa Romeo and Haas, as well as Nicolas Latifi, retired. George Russell, whose future at Williams seems uncertain, again managed to get out of the first segment and continue into Q2. Vettel also managed to improve his time and climbed to eighth position.

Mercedes and Ferrari drivers created medium tires early in Q2, while everyone else, including Max Verstappen, chose the softer tires.

Boots took the lead with 1: 16.466 until Hamilton was able to complete his first fastest lap. The reason for this was the traffic during his run, as he even blocked his tires, with which he has to start the race if he achieves his fastest lap in Q2 with them. His next attempt gave him second place with 1: 16,824. In third place for the moment was Verstappen with 1: 17.096.

Before the final rounds, Ricciardo and Albon were threatened with relegation, and Vettel was in the top 5.

Sebastian Vettel finished 15th after failing to improve. Ferrari chose its drivers to go around with only medium hard tires. Löckler continued into Q3, finishing eighth in the second segment.

Daniel Ricciardo spun during his last fast lap and took out the yellow flags. He finished the session in 10th place and continued with the next segment.

His teammate, Esteban Ocon, however, was eleventh. Besides Vettel and the Frenchman, Stroll, Quiat and Russell also withdrew.

Valteri Botas took the lead at the beginning of Q3 with 1: 16,986. Lewis Hamilton was 0.047 slower than his teammate, and behind them, just over ten, was Max Verstappen. The Dutchman was faster in the first sector but lost time in the next two.

Not only Pierre Gasley and Daniel Ricciardo were in the first laps of the track. Renault’s mechanics changed the Australian’s rear wing after his accident at the end of Q2.

Mercedes chose its drivers to do their last laps on medium tires. Lewis Hamilton managed to improve his performance and took the lead with 1: 16.934. This lap was improved by Valteri Botas, who recovered the first position with 1: 16.754.

But Hamilton managed to take pole position for tomorrow’s race, after making his last lap of 1: 16.652.

Max Verstappen finished third with 1: 16.904, and Charles Leclerc finished fourth.
