Even from the picturesque village of Fazanovo in Strandzha, where he has lived with his wife Maria for many years, Slabakovi’s rebellious spirit can be felt. “If I hear the word party, I grab the cover. If I knew what you are like, you would be in jail or you would be beaten up somewhere, ”says Krassimir.
In 1991, he was invited to work in the United States on a design project. Initially he left for only 3 months, then the stay was extended for a year, and then his family came to him. Slabakovi remained in the United States for 20 years, and one of the most exciting projects of the sculptor, who is also a woodcarver, is the restoration of the mansion of fashion dictator Gianni Versace.
When they go to America, Slabakov’s children are small. Daughter Boryana is 8 years old and son Stefan 13, who has just finished his first year at the High School of Applied Arts in Sofia. She graduated in painting in the United States with honors. Boryana, on the other hand, took 2 years for one, became interested in marine biology, and became a professional diver.
“It was more difficult for us in America than it was for young people now. Only Krassimir was involved in art, I worked in a casino, although I had never played cards before. I was a supervisor and that was the only stable income for the family, ”says María, artist and designer.
For three years, the Slabakov have shared bread with the Fazanovo residents.

of the townspeople. They start with one a week and for half a year they distribute two so that the elderly can go through the week without worrying about their livelihood. This is possible thanks to Slabakovi’s “Share the Bread” campaign. Includes the sale of bamboo cups, designed by Maria and Krassimir. They have the inscription “Share the bread” in several languages, the signatures of both and the Fazanovo coat of arms. They are made in China by order of Slabakovi. Last year, the family managed to order 2,000 glasses. Each one is priced at BGN 15, 5 of which goes to the noble initiative.
“With each cup purchased, five loaves of bread are delivered to the residents of Fazanovo. They are put on sale in various beach bars, we also distribute them in the exhibitions we do ”, says María.
Recently, the Slabakov agreed to the oven that bakes bread to bring the loaves to town. Thus, the grandparents received hot bread. The example of the artistic family is contagious. There were quite a few cases where anonymous donors paid 40 to 50 loaves of bread directly into the oven, wanting it to be delivered to residents of Fazanovo.
In the beginning, the bread went with a newspaper, which Maria and Krassimir wrote and printed themselves. It contained useful tips, recipes, news about the region. Now the Slabakovs have planned to replace it with a radio. They decided to restore the radio station in the village, and Krassimir had enough old radios to install in the pheasant grandmothers’ houses. “This way they will have updated information, they will listen to local news,” he said.
In addition to his studio, the sculptor likes to stay in the garden, where he and his wife grow incredibly delicious tomatoes. “We give to friends, they are very happy. We also have zucchini, cambi, watermelon and melon. We have planted corn, strawberries, “says Slabakov. Maria praises him for having recently been able to repair an old 1939 motorcycle and put it back together. With him, Kraso, as his wife likes to call him, goes to the family gallery in Lozenets.
