Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter finished 0-0 at the Kiev Olympic Stadium in a Group B match of the Champions League. The match was led by Georgi Kabakov, and the Nerazzurri should bitterly regret that they did not leave the Ukrainian capital with all three points. The Bulgarian referee is probably to blame for this, as he did not award a penalty for an infringement against Romelu Lukaku in the second half.
A week after Real Madrid’s incredible guest win, the Ukrainians were totally outmatched by the Italians, although they had their chances. Thus, before the match between Real Madrid and Borussia Monchengladbach at 10 pm in the standings, Shakhtar leads with 4 points, ahead of Inter already with 2. The Germans are in third place with 1 point.
The first half was entirely for Inter, and Antonio Conte’s men must feel very sorry for lost chances. In the 17th minute Lukaku came out alone against Trubin, but couldn’t get past him. The ball returned to Niccolo Barrela, who hit the crossbar.
The good performances of the Nerazzurri continued, and soon after Barrel’s shot was deflected by Trubin’s last efforts. Lukaku, meanwhile, shoots with his head after a cross from a corner kick, but sends the ball through the door.
At the end of the first half, Inter were back inches from the goal. Lukaku shot dangerously from a free kick, but the hosts’ base showed a great reflection and pondered.
After the break, Inter showed that they will seek victory more actively. In the 54th minute Lautaro Martínez made a unique pass. Trubin fired an insidious shot and the ball landed on the Argentine a few meters from the door. However, Lautaro did not know how he did not find the door empty.
Twenty equivalent minutes followed, and in 77 came the most controversial situation in the game. Cooper dropped Lukaku with both hands in the penalty area. The Nerazzurri have long protested Kabakov’s passivity. At one point, some of the Inter players even surrounded the Bulgarian. However, he noted that he had consulted with colleagues in the room about replays of the video and was adamant: there is no penalty! The television reruns were not convincing enough or showed that there was a penalty.
Until the end, Inter maintained the initiative, but never scored.
