After serving just one term and staying in the White House for four long years, on January 20, 2021 Trump will have to leave. On this day, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take office as President and Vice President. Yes, Trump threatens to take legal action against the election results, but his chances are slim.
Good news for many
This is good news for a world that believes in multilateral treaties and depends on a credible America. For all those who are convinced of the meaning of NATO and the Paris Climate Agreement.
For companies that need security and a stable legal framework. Good news for all those who consider transatlantic relations important and hold fast to the cohesion and strength of Western democracies.
Gone are the days when the United States was willing to shoulder the burden of responsibility on its own and even voluntarily played the role of world policeman. Even Barack Obama has made it clear that he expects much more from Europe, including financial and military commitments, than Europeans. Donald Trump has continued along this strategic line and Joe Biden will follow suit. Well, maybe a little more diplomatic than Trump.
Joe Biden is a staunch ocean liner, as is Barack Obama, whose vice president he was. Biden values Europe and Germany as reliable partners. He promised that the United States would rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement and continue to honor its commitments under other multilateral treaties, including NATO.
The United States will once again be a trusted partner
Led by President Biden, the United States will once again become a trusted partner. And if Europeans take the warning given them by the four years of Donald Trump seriously, the EU and the United States could even be equal partners. This could happen when the Europeans in NATO finally take responsibility for Europe’s role in the world.
From an American domestic political point of view, these elections are far from optimistic. Donald Trump leaves behind a devastated land. Many Trump supporters will certainly continue to believe that the election results were rigged. They will blame Joe Biden for the economic turmoil America will have to deal with in the coming months, if not years. In fact, part of the responsibility falls on Donald Trump, who seriously underestimated the danger of a pandemic in the United States.
During the four years of his rule, Donald Trump changed the country. Democrats relied on a landslide victory as proof that the vast majority of Americans want a different policy. But that did not happen.
Difficult years await
“America First”: This cry did not bring Trump victory, but it still resonates in full force. Donald Trump has allowed many Americans to openly demonstrate their racism and xenophobia. And they will continue to do so.
