“A connecting thread” is the name of the project, which links towns and villages
Seen from afar, the cone-shaped Christmas tree in Artena, near Rome, resembles a palette of mosaics and colors.
However, when you approach it, you see that in reality each figure in this mosaic is different from the others and is a square of lace, crocheted and connected to others. Thus, all together they form a cone six meters high, the upper part of which ends with a red heart.

and they with others, etc. until they all form a tree together. In times like today, there is hardly a more successful and symbolic way to present the solidarity that everyone needs.
The Artena tree, made by 200 local women who used recycled wool, is just one of dozens of solidarity Christmas trees in Italy. However, first created in 2018, they are now gaining momentum and fans across the country more than ever.
There is hardly any area in the Apennines where these pretty wicker trees have not multiplied.

The idea was born in 2018 in Trivento, a mountain village in the Molise region. Local resident Lucia Santorelli turns on hundreds of Italian women, whose hobby is crochet, through social media.

It starts from the cathedral and reaches the central square of the town. The knitted rug is registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest in the world, made on a hook. Its creators then divided it into many parts and sold them, with the proceeds going to charity. Lucia, however, did not sit with her arms crossed for long.
Grab the hook again and start knitting, involving not only women but also men. This time a large cone is formed from the 1,300 woven patterned squares, which are the “tiles” of the tree. Each square weighs half a kilo. Through the tree they go together

Trivento’s Christmas project involves people of five nationalities from 60 Italian cities located in 11 districts. Through social media, the Christmas tree is reaping unprecedented success around the world.
For this reason, in 2019 Trivento is making wicker wood again, but it is also copied in Italy and abroad. A total of 40 towns, including Sweden, Belgium and Brazil, are making similar Christmas trees on a hook.

In addition, its production is an ideal way to fill the time at the home of grandmothers and aunts during the confinement. In fact, the preparation of the wicker tree for the current Christmas begins in February-March, when the pandemic arrives. The men also have an interest in the project: they make the iron wire structure that supports the tree. For many project participants, this is a way of feeling close to their neighbor and friend despite their loneliness during quarantine.
The Italian municipalities that are enthusiastically involved in the Solidarity Tree project are from one end of Botuşa to the other.
