Bulgaria participates in the complete portfolio of the seven vaccines of the common European initiative for the production and supply of future vaccines against COVID-19.
This was confirmed in today’s extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, in which the government adopted a decision for the participation of our country in the negotiations for the purchase of another contract on the subject, that of the “Johnson” company.
The cabinet’s decision is a consequence of the solidarity participation declared by our country in the fund initiated by the European Commission to combat COVID-19, through which to support the research sector for the development of vaccines and medicines against COVID- 19.
Bulgaria, along with other EU member states, has become a donor to the fund and participates in this extremely complex, dynamic and costly process. The goal is for Bulgarian citizens to have equal access to a vaccine when it is found, with guarantees of quality, safety and efficacy, and the vaccine should be administered only if desired.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov stressed that Bulgaria participates in all kinds of developments as an investor, as well as absolutely all other European EU member states – disciplined, following the instructions of the EC.
“To be ready in the fastest way, if there are vaccines, we can get them, apply them. That is why today we react quickly,” Prime Minister Borissov was categorical.
According to him, the sums allocated for this purpose are really very high, not only for Bulgaria but also for all member states, but the most important thing is that our country is ready for a quick reaction.
Health Minister Kostadin Angelov pointed out that there are currently 7 vaccines in an advanced stage of development, and each of them has a quota for certain doses. For Bulgaria, the quota set exceeds the needs and is worth almost BGN 380 million. If the cost of logistics and storage is added to the value of the vaccines, the costs are expected to exceed 500 million lev.
“The country will have a large number of vaccines: between 12 and 13 million vaccines,” Minister Angelov said.
Finance Minister Kiril Ananiev confirmed the government’s position that the approval of the National Assembly on the issue is necessary.
“We have no other useful movement than to unite in solidarity with all European countries. It is good to have different sets of vaccines. It is shameful that we get such a large quantity of vaccines and at such a high price. But apparently this is how the mechanism was invented. who works in the EU, “said Ventsislav Mutafchiiski, president of the National Operational Headquarters.
The Chief Inspector of State Health, Associate Professor Angel Kunchev, also expressed concern that our country will receive too many vaccines that we will not be able to use.
The director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases and member of the National Operative Staff Todor Kantardzhiev pointed out that at this stage the vaccine seems to be the only way out of the pandemic and it is important that our country has different types of vaccines, both antigen and vaccines “alive”. , which are also applicable to different contingents of people.
