“It’s not just house and home prices that have risen to record highs. And building lots have never been more expensive.” This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office. According to the calculations of its experts, in 2019 a square meter of land in Germany cost an average of 190 euros. Ten years ago, building plots sold for an average of € 122 per square meter.

The plots in Berlin and Hamburg were especially expensive. There, 1 square meter costs an average of 1,328 euros and 1,158 euros, respectively. It was most profitable in the East German provinces of Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In these three provinces 1 square meter of land was sold for an average of slightly less than 60 euros.

According to experts from the Federal Statistical Office, prices are influenced by the size of the settlements. In towns with less than 2,000 inhabitants, prices per square meter of land were around 66 euros on average. At the same time, in the 14 largest German cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants, building plots sold on average 17 times more expensive – for € 1,128 per square meter.
