The International Olympic Committee said it was shocked by the news of the execution of Iranian fighter Navid Afkari, DPA reported.
“The execution of the fighter Navid Afkari in Iran is very sad news. The IOC is shocked by this announcement,” the statement said yesterday.
The 27-year-old athlete was executed yesterday at Adelabad Prison in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz.
The fighter’s case drew attention on social media.
Authorities charged the convict with stabbing a security guard at a water company in Shiraz during riots in the city. His confessions were also released, but his family and human rights groups said they had been extracted under torture.
Earlier this week, the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, called by letters to the president and the supreme leader of Iran, asking for Afrika’s request. In a statement, the IOC expressed concern that the Iranian authorities had ignored both his appeals and those of athletes around the world, Iran’s National Olympic Committee and wrestling federations.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Navid Afkari,” the committee added.
