After suffering a coronavirus, some people can develop immunity against it for years. That’s according to a new study cited by the New York Times.
Eight months after infection, most people have enough immune cells to repel the coronavirus and prevent recurrence, the data shows.
The study has yet to be published in a scientific journal, but it is the most comprehensive for immunological memory regarding COVID-19.
“This amount of cellular memory is likely to prevent most people from receiving hospital treatment for a serious illness for years,” said Shane Croty, a virologist at the Institute of Immunology in La Jolla, California, and leader of the new study.
The study is also based on the finding that survivors of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused by another coronavirus carry important immune cells 17 years after recovery.
