Illegal gold mining is taking place at various locations by washing sand along the Struma riverbed in the Kyustendil region, environmentalists report. Recently, the regional police directorate in Kyustendil announced that pre-trial proceedings had been initiated after an inspection of land such as the village of Dvorishte, BNR reported.
The inspection was carried out by agents of the General Directorate of the National Police, the Kyustendil Regional Police Directorate and representatives of the Ministry of Energy. The case was notified to the prosecutor on duty.
Gold is also made by washing sand and gravel in the Rajdavitsa village area, near the local church “St. Bogoroditsa”. There was a team located over the weekend.
Gold has been made for years by washing it along the Struma River in the Kyustendil region. Even private land is bought, dug for gold, and then the land is not restored. He’s also digging in the river easement, says a Kyustendil conservationist, who requested anonymity.
“They buy the land, they remove the humus, then they dig it up, they take it out and then they put the earth back, but the stones, being pushed there, nothing grows in 50 years except the weeds. It has an excavator and a truck with a sieve on it, “he told national radio.
