She works in a nursing home. And in all probability it got infected there. Even after several of her colleagues tested positive, German Barbara Meyer continued to feel protected because she always wore the most reliable masks and protective clothing when necessary. “I didn’t assume I was taking any risks,” the 60-year-old told SPIEGEL magazine.
“A big mistake, a terrible stupidity”
But one day after work he felt ill, had a fever and was coughing badly. Barbara Meyer sought medical help and was immediately tested in addition to the tests she regularly underwent in a nursing home. While waiting at home for the results, her condition got so bad that she couldn’t reach the phone. After the health service did not contact her, they sent the police. Barbara Meyer was immediately hospitalized for the first time in her life.
In an interview with nordbayern.de, Meyer said that a mobile team was at her workplace in January, but she refused to be vaccinated because she felt very well and did not think she could be infected. He even took additional shifts after his colleagues fell ill with COVID-19. “But most of all, I was very skeptical about vaccines. I had heard all kinds of things about them, and my family and friends didn’t want to rush either. I’m so sorry now. How stupid I was,” Meyer says. The woman goes on to say how much everything cost her and what the virus did to her. I still have a catheter. The feeling was one of total helplessness. And I used to be so alive, “the woman told SPIEGEL. Meanwhile, her condition is stable, doctors allow her to take a few steps, and a specialist therapist helps her learn to breathe properly again.
“Knowing that you may not wake up tomorrow”
“I never thought something like this could happen to me. I did not believe when politicians spoke of the dangers of this contagion. But I was wrong. It was a big mistake,” admits the 60-year-old woman. Today he described his refusal to get vaccinated as “terrible nonsense.” She admits that she was afraid to get vaccinated after reading numerous warnings on the internet from people who seemed like experts. “But now I know what it’s like to live with the feeling that you won’t wake up tomorrow,” says Barbara Meyer. From his hospital bed, he addresses all the skeptics and advises them to get vaccinated. “I hear so many people crying here in the room. COVID-19 is a very sad disease,” he said, adding: “If I live, I will get vaccinated immediately.”
