In a series of articles, we tell you about the HelpKarma Foundation and how it manages the millions raised from donations.
The prosecution announced that it was launching an investigation. I hope the researchers will pay attention to the changes that are taking place on the platform after our reports.
As we have already told you, the Help Karma Foundation was established by Konstantin Krastev in 2017. In addition to him, Krastev’s wife, Ivelina, technical director Slavcho Slavachev and Ralitsa Eneva, mother of a child with a congenital disease, president of the foundation of public benefit and one of the faces of the Bulgarian Christmas until 2018.
Eneva has three campaigns on the platform, one of which, for parts for the bicycle of one of her children, has already ended. His first campaign is for his son Rado. He has spinal muscular atrophy and is being treated in the United States. As we already told you in bTV Reporters, at the beginning Eneva announced that for four years 100,000 euros are needed for the expenses that accompany her treatment. Later, however, the amount was changed to 350,000 euros.
He says the drastic increase in the amount he collects was due to two upcoming operations: “One is in the range of about $ 100,000, for the pelvis it is something in the range of $ 50-60,000, which of course until we receive we cannot be sure of a black and white offer, but we have targeted it in the campaign.
In a letter to bTV, Help Karma owner Konstantin Krastev notes that a final treatment offer is required within 2 months of the start of the campaign at the latest. But in the case of Ralitsa Eneva the rule does not apply. The money for his son’s future operations has been raised for more than a year, it appears from the campaign on the platform, with no offers. But even if $ 160,000 is added to the 100,000 euros originally announced for two operations, the total amount is still well below the 350,000 euros requested, says Dr. Antoaneta Toncheva.
“I think it should be very clear to donors about the therapy in the United States. Why is the child still in a clinical trial and for how long? Donors need to know. Because the truth is, this treatment is available. in Bulgaria since April last year, ”said Dr. Antoaneta Toncheva.
Ralitsa Eneva insists that she also fought for treatment in Bulgaria. But your son will continue to receive treatment in the United States. And Dr. Toncheva has calculated that since she started raising donor money at Help Karma, Eneva has reported that about € 110,000 has been spent.
For the period in which there is a campaign at the foundation, she and her son have traveled to the United States 9, not 30 times, our inspection shows. Eneva shows us only the last tickets bought for her and her son’s next trip to New York. There is no description of the costs in your campaign report, and no report document is public.
“In the days after our interview with Ralitsa Eneva, relocations began on reported expenses for her campaign. 7,000 euros for treatment reported on August 24 disappear. They appear as an expense in October and then in June. Another 8,000 euros, reported on October 5, also receive a retroactive date: February 19. These changes continued after the Prosecutor’s Office announced on November 6 that an inspection of the foundation had begun. And so on until November 12, when the costs reported by Ralitsa Eneva melted sharply.
Before our interview, I had written about 6,000 euros spent on rehabilitation, and after November 12, more than 3,700 less. More than 42,000 euros of treatment were prescribed before our meeting, and then 23,000 euros, that is, more than 19,000 less. Before the interview, more than 22,000 euros were reported for aid, and later they decreased by more than 10,000 and there are about 12,000 euros left in the report.
Whole items also disappear from his report: a wheelchair for stairs – 2,000 euros and expenses recorded as “other”, for a total of 16,000 euros. Or the total amounts reported as spent melt into around 65,000 euros or more than 50% of the amount reported as of the date of our interview.
Aside from donor money, it is impressive that Ralitsa’s campaign also receives money from parents who have lost their children. The father of a baby who dies of leukemia makes a transfer to Eneva’s campaign for the amount of 5,000 euros. The mother of a child who was unable to recover from the same illness transferred almost 17,000 euros to Eneva’s campaign. It turns out that when the father of the first child made the donation to Eneva’s campaign, he, like her, was an employee of Help Karma.
And the treatment of the other child, for whom money was raised at the foundation, was covered by the health insurance fund, it follows from a bTV application under the access to public information law.
Ralitsa Eneva is collecting donations for another campaign, for children with spinal muscular atrophy. The costs reported in this campaign also changed after our interview. Of the 31,266 euros collected before the interview, 20,562 euros were reported, and afterwards the report is now for 16,929 euros or almost 4,000 euros less.

Ralitsa Eneva insists that she covers all personal travel from her own funds.
Ralitsa Eneva’s remuneration is described in the foundation’s report. For 2019, you have been charged 10,000 BGN as a member of the Board of Directors. Or around BGN 830 per month. From May 2019 until 3 months ago, Eneva was charged a salary of less than 1,300 BGN, according to the data we have. Only since July 2020 they have been charged BGN 3,000. The family has no other officially declared income, our inspection shows. Again we asked and again did not receive the information documents about Ralitsa Eneva’s campaigns.
