Valteri Botas started cleaner and better than Lewis Hamilton. The world champion struggled at first and Max Verstappen stood his ground behind him. Behind the three battles was formed between Daniel Ricardo, Pierre Gasley and Charles Löckler. Alex Alban did not start well and allowed the Ferrari driver to overtake him. On the first lap, the accident happened to Lance Stroll and he had to enter the Racing Point garage to replace the front of his car.

The race started well for Max Verstappen, who also did the fastest lap to Imola. The Dutchman overtook Lewis Hamilton on the first lap and chased the leader Valteri Botas.

The top three posted the best times over the next three laps as the Finn increased his lead over Verstappen. The Emilia Romagna track did not allow much overtaking, but on lap six Carlos Sainz passed his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

On the ninth lap, Pierre Gasley learned the bad news that he had to return to the Alfa Tauri box due to car problems and the race for him was over. At the same time, the three in the front, who were driving on medium tires, separated from the other drivers. Valteri Botas deftly held the lead and was one second and six tenths ahead of Max Verstappen.

The Finn made a record lap and continued to lead after 12 rounds. In the rear positions a battle took place between Daniel Ricardo and Charles Löckler. The Ferrari driver had softer tires and put pressure on the Australian. At the same time, Alex Albon with Red Bull was subjected to a massive attack by Daniel Quiat with Alpha Tauri.

On lap 18, the two continued the battle and there was an attempt to overtake the Russian, causing a collision between the two, but no more serious incident occurred. A lap later, Max Verstappen entered Red Bull boxing. According to the team’s strategy, this should be the Dutchman’s only stop in the competition. Immediately after that, Valteri Boots was ready to stop.

Lewis Hamilton led the column and refused to pit. The Briton had a 1,115 lead over his Mercedes teammate. The world champion did two consecutive fastest laps. At the same time, the Mercedes boxer told Valteri Botas that there was a problem in the car and that the Finn had to be very careful not to overtake Max Verstappen.

The Australian Red Bull rider overtook the Haas rider and gained an excellent position for the first places. In the 29th minute, Esteban Ocon with Renault dropped out of the race due to a clutch problem.

The elimination of the Frenchman required the entry of a safe virtual car, which was great news for Lewis Hamilton, who entered boxing and came out with a comfortable lead over Max Verstappen and Vlateri Botas.

On lap 37, Max Verstappen put serious pressure on Valteri Botas, but the Mercedes driver managed to withstand the pressure from the Dutchman and did not allow himself to be overtaken, maintaining second position.

On lap 43, Max Verstappen attacked and overtook Valteri Botas. A Finnish counterattack by Jacques Villeneuve followed, but the Dutchman managed to maintain his position.

On lap 51, the worst happened for Red Bull, after Max Verstappen blew out the right rear tire and pulled out of the race. The reason for this was a problem in the Dutchman’s car. A safety car left after the accident.

Valteri Botas reacted immediately and entered the area. Sergio Pérez did the same. Following the restart of the race, Lewis Hamilton was just one second ahead of his Mercedes teammate.

Two laps after the Max Verstappen incident, Williams driver George Russell also dropped out of the race. This required re-entry of a safe car. At the same time, there was an accident in the Racing Point garage, after Lance Stroll crashed his car into one of the mechanics. Another stop was welcome for Daniel Ricardo, who came in third and thus avoided the final pressure from Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez.

On lap 58 the race was restarted and a strong battle for fourth place ensued. Sergio Pérez aggressively approached and outplayed Alex Alban. The Red Bull driver made a mistake and turned around. In this episode, Daniel Quiat managed to climb to fourth place after beating Charles Leclerc.

Lewis Hamilton managed to set the fastest lap in the 60th round and continued to lead the column. At the end of the race there were no changes in the classification and the Briton achieved another victory.
