On October 19, Bulgarian Medical Day, the Bulgarian Medical Union presented the prestigious Medical Guild Awards for 2020.
This year, the BMA created a special category and awarded deserving physicians and medical institutions across the country for “Fighting the Pandemic – Kovid 19”. They are:

Nominations were sent from around the country in the category “Fighting the Pandemic – Kovid 19”. The jury determined the winners, following the preliminary rules for voting on the nominations already submitted.
At the beginning of the ceremony, all those present bowed their heads in a minute of silence in memory of the doctors who failed to combat the insidious disease, but fulfilled their professional and moral duty to the end. They received posthumous awards.
The title of “Doctor of the Year 2020” was awarded to Adjunct Professor Alexander Oscar.
The winner of this year’s award is an ophthalmologist, head of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University Hospital “Alexandrovska”, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology of MU – Sofia. He is one of the few specialists in Bulgaria dealing with retinopathy in premature babies and the application of laser therapy for the treatment of complications.
This year’s winner of the Doctor of the Year award is the President of the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom” and the Secretary of the Bulgarian Society of Ophthalmology.
It is the foundation of the Do Good initiative, in which more than 30,000 children have been screened for free in the last 7 years and donated more than 1,000 glasses. In the last two years, it has organized free exams for more than 3,000 adult patients, most of whom are housed in social care homes.
Associate Professor Oscar is also the basis for the joint initiative “Together we will manage” between the BMA and the Bulgarian Society of Ophthalmology. Prof. Associate Oscar is personally involved in the logistics and organization, in the recruitment of volunteers, and thanks to his effort and great desire, about 500 families of doctors and their relatives were quarantined from all over the country.
Adjunct Professor Alexander Oscar thanked the award and recalled that professional organization is the basis for saving Bulgarian Jews, including their grandparents. Dr. Oscar said that the reward for him is a responsibility as a physician so that he does not forget his obligations to patients, as well as his responsibility to society.
In the category “Contribution to the development and application of innovative medicine and unique techniques”, prizes were awarded to:

Dr. Stoyan Borisov, Cap. The secretary of the Bulgarian Medical Association presented the awards for “Long-term activity in the field of medicine and active contribution to the development of the specialty”. The winners are:

In the category “You are our future” the awards were presented by the Vice President of the BMA Prof. Nikolay Gabrovski. For the young medical hopes of Bulgaria received awards:
Dr. Dimitar Tsachev and Dr. Stanislav Kotsev
The “Doctor of the Year 2020” ceremony was opened by the president of the BMA. Dr. Ivan Madjarov said that in this tense year, everyone needs at least a little distance from the enormous burden they are subjected to from the daily battle with the insidious disease.
“We need to enjoy the recognition we deserve, because there is no more noble mission than the one established centuries ago by the Dutch physician Van Tulp -” Shining for others, I burn, “said Dr. Madjarov. He thanked the entire medical union for “continuing to” shine “, for continuing to work hard” and recalled that doctors deserve the respect of society and wished all the winners many more years to be satisfied.
Among the official guests of the event are Deputy Prof. Diana Kovacheva, Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria and Svetlana Yordanova – Deputy Minister of Health. The ceremony was also attended by representatives of municipal, private, regional and university hospital associations, the academic community, dentists, pharmacists, patient organizations, the Bulgarian Red Cross, as well as many other partners and friends of the Medical Union. Violeta Mancheva, news anchor of Bulgaria ON AIR, leads the “Doctor of the Year 2020” ceremony with a lot of charm and a smile.
