Russian authorities rushed to evacuate more than ten villages in the Ryazan region after a fire broke out at a munitions depot, Reuters reported, cited by BTA.
Detonations are heard in images of the warehouse uploaded to social networks. In one of these videos, a witness said shrapnel and ash fell from the sky.
Reuters cannot confirm the authenticity of these images.
An ammunition explosion is heard every 5-10 seconds, RIA Novosti reported, citing emergency response services.
The emergency ministry said a road was being closed and more than 10 villages were being evacuated within a five kilometer radius of the warehouse, 260 kilometers southeast of Moscow, Interfax reported.
The warehouse caught fire after it was engulfed in fire, exploding in a nearby field and blowing it away, TASS quoted the Russian military as saying. No one was injured and the military and civilians were evacuated.
The press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations clarified that more than 1,600 people from 14 settlements were evacuated.
Several dozen houses in the Ryazan region have been damaged by ammunition shrapnel, a source said.
There have been fires and explosions in Russian military ammunition depots for years, drawing criticism for lowered safety standards.
