Gasley defeated Sainz in a completely unexpected match for victory in Italy

Pierre Gasley (Alpha Tauri) won the incredibly dramatic Italian Grand Prix, defeating Carlos Sainz (McLaren) in a completely unexpected duel for the Monza victory. Lance Stroll finished third with Racing Point. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was penalized 10 seconds in the box for entering the pit when it was closed. None of the Ferrari cars finished the race: Sebastian Vettel had a brake failure, Charles Löckler crashed in Parabolica.

The Monza weather was great on race day too. The air temperature was almost 28 degrees, that of the track, almost 45 degrees. Valteri Botas took off from the track as he left the starting grid and crossed the gravel.

Lewis Hamilton started purely from pole position, and behind him Carlos Sainz overtook Boots. Lando Norris also tried to overtake the Finn and managed to do it two laps later. In Lesmo 2, Valteri lost another position, to Sergio Pérez. Boots was sixth and his radio message was that he had a flat tire or some other problem. Seventh collapsed after the start Max Verstappen, who in the second of 53 laps was overtaken by Lance Stroll. In the same round, Daniel Ricciardo worked his way to fifth place.

On the third lap, Verstappen attacked Stroll and managed to regain a spot. Mercedes told Boots that the tire pressure was good.

Hamilton’s lead over Sainz was nearly 3 seconds until lap five

In the sixth round of the Ferrari pitula, Vettel was told there was a problem, immediately after which the German’s brakes caught fire. Sebastian went through the safety zone, but managed to put the car in the pits.

Alex Albon received a 5-second penalty for his incident with Romain Grosjean in the second round of the race. Boots set a better rhythm and from the tenth round he started looking for a way to overtake Ricciardo. In the lead, Hamilton was already 8.3 seconds ahead of Sainz. The Spaniard was just over 4 seconds ahead of his teammate, and Pérez was 1.4 seconds behind Norris.

Lewis got a message that quick gear changes are good for the tires, but not so good for the powertrain. Mercedes was asked to take this into account later in the race.

“I can’t compete with this engine mode. This is a joke,” Boots said on the radio.

In round 18, Charles Löckler entered boxing, he put on hard tires. He was in thirteenth position, from where he started, and just before the box he was pressured by Antonio Giovinazzi with Alfa Romeo.

On lap 20, Kevin Magnussen came to a halt on the track with a breakdown, literally yards from the pit lane entrance. Flight control released a safety car, and Hamilton immediately entered the cake, where he fitted medium tires. This was investigated, as was Giovinazzi’s passage through the pits, as Lewis and the Alfa Romeo driver had made their pits while the pitlane was still closed.

In the 23rd of 53 rounds, it was announced that the pit was open and that several stops had already been made. At McLaren, they changed the tires of both drivers successively, and Norris and Sainz put a half. On the next lap, the safety car returned. Hamilton led the column against Stroll (no boxing). They were followed by Pierre Gasley, Löckler, Kimi Raikkonen and Giovinazzi, all strongly. Sainz and Norris were seventh and eighth, and Botas, Latifi and Ricciardo completed the top 10.

On lap 25, Loeckler crashed badly at Parabolica

This instantly brought out safe driving for the second time on the track. Flight control said Giovinazzi’s penalty was 10 seconds on the cake. Mercedes also thought they would be sanctioned. Massi stopped the race until the track was cleared and the safety barrier was repaired after the Löckler impact.

The cars had lined up in a pitlane when Hamilton’s sentence was announced, the same as Giovinazzi’s. Norris was investigated for driving too slow when entering the pit lane. Meanwhile, Hamilton asked flight engineer Pete Bonington if he could speak to the stewards. Then he went straight to them. He returned to the pits, where he spoke with Mercedes chief strategist James Wolves and team chief Toto Wolf.

After many laps around Pittle, Hamilton finally got back in his car and everyone was getting ready to restart the race.

Flight control ordered that there be no radio communication in the pilots’ path through the grid. In the case of the Norris, the stewards ruled that it had locked the wheels and that no further action was necessary.

In the second outing of the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton again took the lead. Stroll was second on the starting grid, but collapsed in the column. The Canadian Racing Point driver jumped off the track. Gasley came in second, followed by Raikkonen, Giovinaci and Stroll. Lewis immediately entered the box to serve his sentence. The leader of the race was Gasley.

Sainz took fourth place from Stroll, behind Canadian Norris. Boots was seventh ahead of Ricciardo, Ocon, Quiat, Pérez, Latifi, Grosjean, Verstappen, Russell, Albon and Hamilton.

On lap 32, Verstappen returned to the area with a breakdown. Hamilton gave the best laps on the track. Sainz outpointed Raikkonen in the 34th round and was 4.3 seconds behind Gasley. Kimi lost another position: Stroll.

The Finn kept sliding toward the column. Sainz was 3 seconds closer to Gasley and Hamilton passed Albon, Russell and Grosjean.

10 laps before the checkered flag Carlos Sainz was 2.5 seconds behind Gasley. The difference narrowed to 1.6 seconds after three more laps. Hamilton was already tenth after beating Latifi and Raikkonen. Pérez passed him ninth.

Sainz reached Gasley’s lap before the final, but never managed to overtake him.
