France has declared a state of emergency – NOVA

By French decree, the French authorities restored the state of emergency, which provides a legal basis for imposing certain restrictions on COVID-19. It will enter into force at midnight on October 17, and will be valid for the entire territory of the country, reported AFP and BTA. The measures are necessary due to the worsening situation with the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The imposition of a state of emergency will allow Prime Minister Jean Castex to reinstate quarantine measures, such as those that operated across the country from mid-March to mid-May during the first wave of the pandemic, the DPA noted.

The decision comes at a time of rising infections, with more than 26,000 newcomers registered with COVID-19 on Saturday, nearly 13,000 yesterday and another 22,591 in the past 24 hours.

French health authorities today registered more than 9,100 hospitalized with coronavirus for the first time since June 25, which, according to experts, could put the country’s health system on the edge, Reuters reported.

This deterioration “justifies declaring a state of sanitary emergency to be able to take measures strictly proportional to the sanitary risks, urgent and appropriate to the circumstances and place and time,” says the government report.

Commenting on the figures, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a television interview tonight that France was experiencing a new wave of contagion and that further measures were needed. He added that control over the spread of the virus has not been lost, but that the situation is worrying and that new measures are needed.

Strict quarantine measures have been announced in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

By virtue of these measures, France imposes night hours from 9 pm local time until 6 am local time on Saturday, October 17 in several major cities, including Paris. The afternoon time will last four weeks and then parliament will be asked to extend it until December 1, AFP reported.

Among the cities affected by the measure are Marseille, Lille, Lyon, Grenoble, Toulouse. Anyone outside tonight must have a good reason for doing so. “Violators will be fined,” Macron explained. The fine will be 135 euros.

The president recommended limiting private gatherings to no more than 6 people at the table at home. He said there would be no restrictions on travel between regions of the country, no restrictions on public transportation.

A total of 779,063 people have been infected in France since the beginning of the pandemic.
