Todor Karaivanov, a former Svilengrad customs chief, was found guilty of taking a bribe in the face of an ongoing crime by a panel of the Haskovo District Court. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison, the court announced, cited by BTA.

Karaivanov will also have to pay a fine of BGN 5,000, he will be deprived of the right to occupy a post in the state administration for a period of 6 years. The defendant requested and accepted a gift: money in various currencies for a total amount of 600 euros and 1,600 BGN, which he did not follow. They were given to him by SHH and HIH, in order to carry out ex officio actions and not to carry out the actions envisaged in the description of his position as Svilengrad customs chief, according to the indictment.

The court found the defendant Karaivanov guilty of his second charge of using his official position and influence over his subordinates on January 28, 2015 as a civil servant to obtain illegal benefits for himself. – the amount of 10,000 euros. He was later detained during a SANS operation.

The court clarified that with the verdict the court determines a common punishment for the two acts in the amount of the most severe of them, which must be fulfilled under the initial general regime. The sentence is subject to appeal and protest to the Plovdiv Court of Appeal.
