Former Sofia airport director becomes director of a key position

Hristo Shterionov, a former director of Sofia Airport, became acting director general of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation Administration (DG CAA) at the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications. He takes office after former CAA chief Stanimir Leshev died in a car accident in Romania.

Shterionov graduated from G. Benkovski Higher Vocational School, specializing in Aircraft Operation and Repair Engineer in 1986. He works at Bezmer, Krumovo and Bozhurishte airports, successively occupying the senior technician positions in an aviation squad, joint Mi-8 helicopter engineer, deputy chief of the technical part.

He arrived at Sofia airport in 1992. Since 1999 he has been Deputy Director of Operational Safety and Emergency Rescue. Since 2008 he has been successively Deputy Director and Director of the Airport Flight Safety Directorate. From June 26, 2013 to February 2017, he was Executive Director of the Sofia Airport EAD and then for a short period he was also Director of Plovdiv Airport.

DG CAA is the agency that issues all permits in the country related to civil aviation and licenses for aircraft, airlines, flight permits and everything related to civil aviation.
