The former governor of the Mexican state of Jalisco, Aristóteles Sandoval, was shot in the back by an unknown person in the bathroom of a restaurant in the Puerto Vallarta resort. His bodyguard got into a shootout with the attacker. He was transferred to the hospital, but died despite the intervention of the doctors.

The media recall that the Sandoval government as governor passed under the banner of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel. It is a local criminal group that has become one of the most influential in Mexico, leaving behind deaths and conflicts, Reuters notes.

Prosecutor Gerardo Octavio Solís said Sandoval, 46, was in a restaurant in downtown Puerto Vallarta with three other people. They shot him at 1:40 am when he went to the bathroom. One of his 15 bodyguards was seriously injured in the shooting.

The prosecutor added that the restaurant “tampered” with the crime scene by cleaning fingerprints and removing security cameras in an attempt to “evade justice.” According to the investigation, 8 to 10 people were involved in the attack, but it is not clear who is responsible.
