FOR COVID-19: The first day of school will be more expensive

This year, the first day of school will cost us more. The reason is that in addition to the traditional notebooks, backpacks and supplies, parents must purchase disinfectants and masks.

Although students will not be required to wear masks in the classroom, they will need them during recess. Therefore, every child should have at least 2 masks a day to change when they get dirty. Together with personal disinfectants, the amount is around BGN 50, the parents estimate. And when we add up the other expenses, like sports equipment, textbooks, and pencils, sending a student to school this year can go as high as BGN 300.

UNKNOWN ABOUT THE START: Principals and Parents’ Concerns About the New School Year

The new backpack will not be a cost only to parents of first graders. She will be present on future second grader Kaloyan’s shopping list.

“We had taken one for last year, which turned out to be quite difficult considering they carry a lot of textbooks. This year we will look for a lighter one,” says Kaloyan’s mother.

It is the backpack that comes out the most serious purchase, merchants say. Prices in bookstores vary from 60 to 160 leva. “Depending on whether it is a type of hard or soft box, most models have an ergonomic back.” Almost all parents strive to buy the best for their children, “say the sellers.

And from 50 to 70 lev, there is only a set of notebooks and writing aids such as pencils and markers. Although the bookstore also has an online store, most customers prefer to choose textbooks.

“Many parents want to come to the place and see what backpacks are and the child can choose,” say the bookstores.

“Sure there must be a disinfectant, and I suppose they have provided it in the schools, but it’s nice to have one too,” says Kaloyan’s mother, Maria.

How is the preparation for the first school day in our country?

A mask that lasts at least 50 washes costs 7-10 levs. A tube with disinfectant: 3 to 5 cams. Each laptop costs between 50 stotinki and a lev. Children also need sports equipment and shoes for physical education classes.

Many principals have already decided that the first day of school on September 15 will be only for the students who will cross the threshold of the school for the first time: first grade, fifth grade and eighth grade students. This will be the case of school 18 in the capital.

“The opening of the school year will begin twice. For the youngest first graders, an opening is at 10 o’clock, a parent meeting follows, we send one of the parents and then the eighth graders enter, the open meeting of parents. As on the 14th, we repeated the entire protocol for action at school, “explained the director of school 18 in the capital, Vili Stoycheva.

In the recommendations of the Ministry of Education, each school must appoint a person in charge every day to monitor whether students observe security measures. Bookstores hope the biggest shopping boom will be a week before the first school bell rings.
