Russia is concerned about reports of the transfer of fighters from Syria and Libya to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
The statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry comes on the fourth day of a further escalation of the conflict, which has led to 2,300 deaths and injuries in Azerbaijan by Armenia and the same by Azerbaijani officials in Yerevan, where authorities say Baku attributes their own deaths to the Armenians.
Almost from the beginning, Armenia, which is considered Russia’s closest ally and where Moscow has a base, has claimed that Turkey is helping Azerbaijan not only with weapons and military advisers, but also with Syrian mercenaries.
Contrary accusations against Yerevan are that it accepts mercenaries from private companies, and Ankara even claims that fighters from the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), considered a terrorist group in Turkey, the EU and the United States, along with Armenians from the Lebanese diaspora, they have been transferred for the fight. and Syria.
However, nowhere in the Russian message is Turkey, which otherwise openly supports Azerbaijan, mentioned, and this afternoon signaled that it was ready for a military intervention in favor of its ally.
Reuters also spoke of mercenaries sent from Turkey, referring to fighters in Syria; the Arab edition of the BBC later wrote on the subject, also speaking with Syrians envoys to Nagorno-Karabakh. There is no possibility of independent confirmation of Russia’s post, but this is a comment from one of the two key “external” forces alongside Turkey.
“Even greater escalation”
The fighters are reportedly being transferred to “illegal armed groups” in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, in particular Syria and Libya, to take part in hostilities, the statement said.
We are deeply concerned by these processes, which not only lead to an even greater escalation of tensions in the conflict zone, but also represent long-term security threats for all countries in the region, the Foreign Ministry said.
We call on the leaders of the countries involved to take effective measures to prevent the use of “foreign terrorists and mercenaries” in the conflict and to withdraw them from the region immediately, the ministry said in a statement, cited by BTA.
The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian-controlled enclave in Azerbaijan, escalated on September 27. Armed clashes are taking place in the disputed territory. Martial law has been declared in Azerbaijan and Armenia.
