Loud explosion-like thunder echoed across Paris this afternoon, causing alarm among residents of the French capital, world agencies reported. The shock wave shook the windows of buildings, made people on the balconies see what was happening and triggered heavy traffic on social media and a wave of phone calls for emergencies, Reuters reported.
Police were quick to assure Parisians that it was not an explosion. The roar was caused by a fighter crossing the sound barrier, the prefecture police wrote on Twitter. Authorities urged citizens “not to obstruct emergency lines with calls.” reported AFP.
The Defense Ministry later said that the fighter jet had been dispatched to assist an airliner that had lost contact with the control tower. The fighter received permission to cross the sound barrier to get to the crashed plane faster, a ministry spokesperson said, BTA reports.
The loud thunder echoed far beyond the French capital and was heard in various departments in the Paris region. He even briefly interrupted the game of the participants in the “Roland Garros” tennis tournament, Stanislas Wawrinka and Dominic Kopfer, notes AFP.
