Asenovgrad-born artist Ivan Georgiev Nikolov, better known by his pen name Pope Jean, has died.

Calling himself: Teacher, Scholar, Professor, Prince, Papa Jean was famous and often on the verge of scandal, avant-garde artist, poet, writer, philosopher, director, and many other roles as an artist.

Ivan Nikolov Georgiev Prince Papa Jean (by name card), known by his pen name Papa Jean, is a Bulgarian avant-garde artist and writer working in the field of painting, collages and graphics. His work crosses different eras.

Ivan Nikolov Georgiev was born on September 8, 1957 in Asenovgrad. He was a social worker, concrete worker, forester, Komsomol secretary, economist (he graduated from the Svishtov Academy of Economics). From his first wife, Maria, he has two daughters and grandchildren.

From 1999 to 2000, Pope Jean was a professor of esotericism and extrasensory mediation at the International Academy of Alternative Sciences in Moscow.[1]. On March 21, 2000, Pope Jean received the title of Scholar and the Order of the New Elite of Russia, which was awarded to him by Eugenia Davitashvili Juna.

He painted portraits of celebrities, including Ivo Karamanski, Lili Ivanova, Bobi Mihailov, Juna, Vladimir Vysotsky, Alla Pugachova, and even Arab sheiks. He is the author of more than 2000 paintings.[2] According to Pope Jean himself, his paintings are close to the Rembrandt style.
