The coronavirus infection has affected former Sofia mayor Stefan Sofiyanski, as well as his wife Alisa, according to a Sofia newspaper, which quotes political allies with a constant smile.

For a whole week, Sofianski, 69, and his wife have been lying in serious condition at their family home on Oborishte Street, and doctors from the Military Hospital and a specially hired nurse have been watching them.

Stefan Sofiyanski was diagnosed with Kovid-19 ten days ago, and his wife Alisa also tested positive for PCR. In the first days the disease was asymptomatic, with only a dry cough and loss of smell. Later, however, the outlook for both of them deteriorated dramatically. The former mayor of Sofia could not breathe and had to wear an oxygen mask at home.

Frightened by his condition and his life, a doctor close to Stefan Sofianski urgently organized the admission of the former mayor to the Military Hospital. However, it turned out that there were no places there and that the popular politician had to be hospitalized with a dozen other patients.

“We urgently try to place him in the Government Hospital, where there is also an open room for patients with coronavirus. However, Stefan surprisingly refused to enter the hospital despite his critical condition.

He felt that he could fight the disease at home without having to go to a hospital bed with connections, “a longtime associate of the popular politician told Weekend.

Thus, the first floor of Stefan Sofiyanski’s family home was urgently converted into a field hospital, and his friends – doctors take turns to this day on shifts to monitor his condition.

According to people close to politics with a constant smile, he has already experienced the worst crisis, but his condition remains worrying. The clinical picture is similar in Alisa Sofiyanska. “Both are older than average and complications are not impossible. As a result of the disease, Stefan has lost 10 kilos and is skin and bones,” is the laconic comment of the doctors.

Stefan Sofianski and his wife Alisa are going through a difficult year. As early as January, the father-in-law of the former mayor of Sofia, Vasil Bozhkov, fled the country to save himself from 13 charges of various crimes. Later, the Interior Ministry arrested Sofianski’s son-in-law, Anton Bozhkov, but the court released him on bail of BGN 1 million.

This fall, Iva Sofiyanska, daughter of Bulgaria’s former mayor and acting prime minister, was removed from the screen by Nova TV, where she hosted a secular program in recent years. The tragic events in Stefan Sofiyanski’s family are complemented by the admission of his 97-year-old mother Elena to a hospital in early 2020. Then the dignified lady fell down the stairs and recovered at the Military Medical Academy during long time.

Sofianski was a key figure in the country’s main politics in the 1990s. In 1993, he was elected vice president of the UDF and entered the 37th National Assembly as a member of parliament. However, Sofianski did not serve a full term as a deputy, as he was elected mayor of Sofia in the fall of 1995.

In turbulent 1997, Sofianski was Bulgaria’s interim prime minister for three months, appointed by then-President Petar Stoyanov after the resignation of the government of Jean Videnov.

He later returned to the mayor of Sofia and his term ended in 2005. The end of his mayoralty in the capital was marked by corruption scandals and a prosecution investigation into the sale of the Central Chambers to an Israeli company nearly 400 times. He was charged with three counts. In the end, however, the court acquitted Sofianski, who announced that he had been the victim of then-chief prosecutor Nikola Filchev.

In the last years of his life, Stefan Sofiyanski did not play an active role in political life. He last ran for mayor of Sofia in the 2011 local elections, but got few votes and did not even run.
