COVID-19 (directly or indirectly) kills more than twice as many people a week as in other years. In just the last 2 months, the population of an entire city like Nessebar, Chirpan or Peshtera has died due to the extraordinary mortality from COVID-19. This analysis was carried out by mathematician and crisis management expert Petar Velkov.
“By the end of the year, as a result of an uncontrolled pandemic, as many people will have died as the inhabitants of some of the cities such as Panagyurishte, Gotse Delchev, Karlovo or Velingrad. This will only be during the last 2 and a half months (10 weeks)” Velkov said. .
Although a reduction in mortality and morbidity was expected due to the restrictive measures introduced, the data shows that more people have died from Covid-19 in the last two weeks than during the whole of last year from influenza and pneumonia combined.
“COVID is the leading cause of death in Bulgaria with underestimated values and unrecorded mortality from the virus. The values for deaths from heart attacks, strokes, other diseases and accidents are lower than from COVID and only for 9 months and when measures are imposed to limit the spread ”, emphasizes Petar Velkov, who with his colleagues has made a special schedule.
